Installing A Garage Door Opener? Things To Know

Sara Walters

Having a garage is a great way to keep your car secure, but it does come with some minor inconveniences unless you also install an electric garage door opener. However, when it comes to choosing the right garage door opener, there is a lot to think about. Here's a look at some of the things that you need to think about when you're trying to choose the right type of garage door opener for your needs.

What Type Of Opener Do You Want?

One of the first decisions you'll need to make is what type of garage door opener you prefer for your garage. There are three primary garage door opener types, and each has its own benefits and drawbacks.

The most common, and often the most affordable, garage door openers rely on a chain system to operate the door. These are often noisy, because of the metal chain. Screw-rod openers are much quieter because they use a rod that spins to operate the opener, so there's no rattling chain. They are, however, more expensive than chain models.

Other models resemble the chain systems but use a belt instead of a chain. These are quiet, like the screw-rod style, but function with the same mechanical structure as chain-style openers. They are often the most expensive openers but are preferred by many because they make so little noise.

How Much Horsepower Do You Need?

Garage door openers come in a few different horsepower ratings. You can find them in one-third, one-half, and three-quarter horsepower. The lower the horsepower rating, the shorter the lifespan you'll likely find with the garage door opener. You also need to factor in the weight of the garage door when you consider the horsepower rating because heavier garage doors will need a stronger opener.

How Will You Address Power Outages?

One thing that many people don't consider when choosing a garage door opener is the fact that, when the power goes out, your garage door opener fails. As a result, it's in your best interest to look for a garage door opener that has a backup solution for opening and closing the door when the power fails. Whether it's a manual trigger that allows you to open and close the door by hand or a backup power source, it's important for you to have an alternative means for operating the door.
